Japanese Low Table

Japanese low table - shou sugi ban (cedar wood). Special technique of charring wood with fire was used to waterproof the wood and results in a charred, beautifully grained cedar wood finish. Originally used as a dining table while sitting on a tatami floor during meal times. It can be used as a coffee table in front of a couch. Meiji period, circa 1885.
